Child Care Centre

ʔiiḥmisuk t̓aatn̓aʔis “Treasure Our Young Ones”

Treasure Our Young Ones Childcare Centre (ʔiiḥmisuk t̓aatn̓aʔis ) opened on January 23, 2017.  We are an extremely busy child care center and also have a very active Out Of School Care Program, both of which run five days a week year-round. Also on staff are our two Elders who share their extensive knowledge and fluency of the Nuu chah nulth language. The Language Nest (ʔiiḥmisuk t̓aatn̓aʔis) is hosted within the Port Alberni Friendship Center’s Childcare Centre and immerses children aged 3 to 5 within nuučaan̓uł culture and language. The children thrive in the loving environment with our Elder Speakers tupaat (Julia Lucas) and čiisma (Patricia Frank), learning and understanding the beginnings of nuučaan̓uł language. tupaat and čiisma are supported by Language Assistant, kwasah (Ryan George Jr.) and the Early Childhood Educator Team.

Volunteers: The Port Alberni Friendship Center is always seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of programs.  Please see Carol Maltais or Michelle Hnennyj at (250) 723-8281 if you are interested in volunteering and they will assist you with your application.
